Sherlock's Pub River Oaks Thursday night--Shinolah

7/19/09

Most karaoke bands will allow the singer to sing 1, and if lucky, 2 songs. Sherlock's live band karaoke is more alike a standard karaoke rotation, with the number of turns determined by the length of the rotation. As of July 17, 2009, this length is shorter than many non-band karaokes--Fantastic!

Sherlock's is also one of the better stages in town as well, and their lighting is perhaps unmatched.

The Shinolah band plays about 150 songs ranging from the 60s (Beatles) to current, and these songs have originals with male or female lead singers. Shinolah is one of the tightest bands in town, and among the live karaoke bands, Shinolah is the tightest and perhaps the best sound from a three man band.

Sherlock's also provide sound man, master of ceremony, better sound equipment, and a great bar environment. So, for overall singing experience, and in consideration of the more songs singable, this is the best place to go. Most attractive women as well.

Shinolah's song list can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/shinolah .

The Howling Coyote

Primarily a blues jam. Excellent stage with good musicians.

The Howling Coyote is an upper scale blues bar-- very nice atmosphere, and not excessive numbers of musicians. Again, singers without instruments aren't really welcome, but if you can sing some blues very well, they'll let you sing a few.

Dan Electro's

Dan Electro's features weekly gatherings of Houston jam musicians, many of whom are highly talented. Musicians in general don't like to have singers who can't play an instrument, so chances are you'll be placed toward the end of the show. Very difficult to get anyth singing in. For live band karaoke, not a place to go.

Mr. Gino's-- (713) 738-0555, 7306 Cullen Blvd.-- Sundays starting at 5:30PM I. J. Goosey

I. J. Goosey is a certified legend of Texas blues; musicians are priviledged to play with this Texas legend and recording artist. The time I visited, his band consisted of a bass-vocalist, drummer, keyboard, and of course I.J. Goosey.

Blues band, but as Goosey is over 60 years old, he'll play nearly anything blues related. Goosey is a musician who can make his guitar sing.

As you can imagine, these are some of Houston's top musicians, so please don't go, unless you can sing and have some lyrics memorized. Positive side, these musicians don't like to sing, so if you can sing, they welcome you.

If you go see I.J. Gossey play at clubs, you'll be charged $15+. This is your opportunity to tell others you've actually sung with I. J. Goosey's band!

Mr. Gino's is a HOuston legend--at one time, many of Houston's leading blues men had their start there. The place is kinda of a dive, but, gives the feel of going to a Harlem club. Cover of $5, but drinks are inexpensive.

Tops for live karaoke band blues singing and musicianship.

Hideaways-- Tuesday nights starting at 10:15 Rick Lee and the Night Owls

Rick Lee is one of Houston's best known guitarist, known for playing amazing blues and for entertaining by playing his electric guitar with his teeth. Featured in Houston Press and Houston Chronicle.

This is a blues jam session, so singers have to sing blues songs. The number of blues songs the band plays is amazing, but unfortunately, lyrics availability is limited. If singer chooses songs such as Mustang Sally, Cocaine, Pride and Joy--you'll get first class musicians accompanient.

In general, blues jams don't like singers who don't play instruments, but Rick Lee and the Nightowls are more forgiving than most blues jams.

Hideaway is more of an upper class blues bar with a cozy feeling.
